How does Genetic Counseling benefit your patients

Beyond the most commonly known genes such as CFTR and BRCA1 and BRCA2, are you familiar with the genes that predispose your patients to a risk of disorders in your specialty? As we learn more about the role of genetics in the underlying causes of disease genetic tests are being developed and made available at a rapid pace. By having an active member of the genetics community on your team to keep up with and identify new research, pertinent resources beneficial to your patient population can be identified as rapidly as they are released. For example, pediatric providers may manage patients with various genetic etiologies, like movement disorders, Autism Spectrum Disorder, ophthalmologic disease, and as we learn more, the attribution to genetic factors continues to rise.

In the area of insurance and liability, the need for genetic counseling is even stronger. As studies accumulate, evidence has showed that up to one third of genetic testing ordered without the review of a genetic counselor required modification to achieve the appropriate testing. Due to this and other reasons, many US based health insurers now require genetic counseling prior to approving coverage for certain tests, particularly in the area of oncology.

Utilizing a genetic counselor reduces exposure to malpractice and liability while also ensuring the best outcomes for patients utilizing genetic testing and in need of appropriate medical follow-up. Utilizing a genetic counselor who is familiar with the appropriate guidelines can ensure patients who need additional care are not missed.

Genetic counselors are trained to help you, as the provider, maneuver the dynamic landscape of genetics. Genetic counseling has historically been utilized in areas such as cancer care, medication management, and infertility. However, genetic counselors are integral to supporting other specialties impacted by genetic disease that are often not considered such as: neurology, psychiatric medicine, primary care, pulmonology, cardiology, endocrinology, dermatology, and others. Our goal at Clover Genetics is to provide genetic expertise to guide you and your patients through access to information that allows individuals to decide what is best suited to their needs. Our genetic counselors are available to be an extension of your own clinical team. When you utilize Cover Genetics for genetic counseling care, you will work directly with our attentive and responsive genetic counselors.
